Bakkerij Funk is a standout bakery and café in Antwerp’s trendy ’t Zuid neighbourhood. Launched in December 2023 by Dennis van Peel and Lisa Wynen, the space blends artisan baking with a laid-back, Scandinavian-inspired atmosphere. It quickly became a local favourite for its plant-based approach to classic viennoiserie: think vegan croissants, cinnamon rolls and other pastries made without butter or eggs, all freshly baked in-house each day. Sourdough loaves, espresso from a local roastery and a rotating selection of seasonal goods round out the menu, alongside light lunch options like toasts and soups and even natural wine later in the day.

The name “Funk” comes from Funky, the beloved dog of co-owner Lisa, whose joyful spirit inspired the bakery’s welcoming vibe. Funk’s popularity means its shelves often sell out by midday, so early visits are recommended if you want the full selection. Add great coffee, a relaxed vibe and genuinely warm service, and you get a bakery that feels thoughtful without trying too hard. Go early if you can, because once Antwerp wakes up, Funk tends to sell out fast.

Fun fact

The bakery’s name doesn’t come from a trend or a style, it’s named in loving memory of “Funky,” the co-owner’s beloved dog. Funky was a black Labrador who loved life and inspired the joyful, welcoming spirit that the bakery now brings to every visitor.
